At Kilcummin N.S., we pride ourselves in offering a wide variety of sports throughout the school year. Some of these sporting initiatives would not be possible without the amazing support of our Parents’ Association and your generosity to their fundraising efforts. Míle buíochas!
It is vital that children are engaging in at least 60 minutes of moderate activity on a daily basis. At Kilcummin N.S., we are working hard to ensure that children have opportunities to be active throughout the day to improve fitness levels and also general wellbeing and concentration levels.
In Term one, swimming lessons took place in the Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre. Thanks to the staff and our secretary, Cornelia, for booking the lessons and transport. We look forward to another term of swimming in Term 1 of the 2025/2026 school year.
We are delighted to be working with Rugby Coach, Mr. Ciarán Casey, this year. The children are developing their rugby skills, fundamental movement skills and have been having lots of fun. It has been great to introduce rugby to the school again this year and our senior pupils are looking forward to a blitz in Term 3. Further details to follow.
Each class has been engaging with our GAA Football and Hurling coaches, Mr. Vince Cooper and Mr. Colm O’ Brien. It is wonderful to watch the children develop their GAA skills from Junior Infants up to Sixth Class and to see everyone participating in skills development and matches.
Our Parents Association is currently organising Gymnastics lessons for all in Term 3. In the past we have worked with Mrs. Theresa Murphy and Mr. Danny Farkas. We are looking forward to working with a new coach this year when we dust off our fabulous gymnastics mats, which were purchased in recent years by the school to promote yet another sport at Kilcummin N.S. Thanks to our PA, who will be financing this got all our pupils.
In Term 2, we worked with John and Mary Moriarty for our annual term of dancing. Mary and John presented entertaining and fun lessons while teaching the children dancing steps, sets and dances. We hope everyone enjoyed the lessons and we wish our All Ireland set dancers all the best in their competitions again this year.
Our PA purchased volleyball nets are currently being used as Transition Year students from St. Brigid’s Presentation Secondary School will be working with us over the next few weeks to teach volleyball skills. Thanks to the TY coordinator, Ms. Ber O’ Connor for collaborating with us yet again at Kilcummin N.S.
We are delighted to be participating in the Basketball Super Sevens competition and also in the FAI Soccer competitions. The list of sports is growing and growing each year, as are our magnificent facilities. We are blessed to have our full size basketball court and our indoor soccer facilities also.
Please continue to encourage your child to bring in any medals and awards on Mondays to showcase and celebrate the successes of all our students. Mol an óige agus tiocfaidh sí!
Thanks to our Board of Management for financing the painting of our school yard last summer. We have a variety of maizes, games and hopscotch to keep everyone active during our breaks. Investment in healthy and active lives at a young age will pay dividends in the future. We would encourage parents to support their local sports organisations and clubs, as it is important for students to be connected with others. Thanks to all our teachers, SNAs and coaches for working hard to make PE fun and engaging. It is great to get positive feedback from our students and to get their input into the PE curriculum and activities also. Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity. Mens sano in corpore sano- Healthy body, healthy mind.
